PMC Policy Position on NIH Research Funding and Support

Policy Position

Date: June 29, 2005

On June 24th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 3010, the FY 2006
Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill, including $28.507 billion for NIH, an increase of $142.3 million (0.5 %), less than the bio-medical rate of inflation and a cause for concern to the PMC, which passed the following resolution:

Recognizing that research funded by the National Institutes of Health provides an essential foundation upon which the progress of personalized medicine depends, and consistent with the vision outlined in the NIH Road Map policy, the Personalized Medicine Coalition (PMC) supports and encourages 'full funding' of both basic and translational research programs (i.e. efforts specifically designed to expedite the transformation of basic research discoveries into therapeutics, treatments, diagnostics or methods for prevention) in genomics, proteomics and other new understandings of cell biology.
