National Jewish Health is developing and implementing six individualized medicine programs in asthma, COPD, cardiology, lung cancer, allergies, and immunologic diseases towards a vision of personalized medicine. Enabled by technology, knowledge of genetics and biology, economics and consumerism, National Jewish is experiencing an inevitable paradigm shift away from one-size-fits-all treatment of symptoms toward personalized healthcare. By taking into account individual differences in health states disease processes and outcomes from interventions, doctors will be able to prescribe safer and more effective treatments. In addition, they are seeking new approaches for predicting disease risk, and potentially even preempting the disease process prior to full manifestation of symptoms through methods such as chemoprevention and epigenetic modification.
